In this project I was able to combine two of my favorite activities; Modeling and practicing Mandarin Chinese. While drawing up some concepts for the gate, I spoke with my Chinese instructor at length (in Chinese!) about the intricacies of Chinese architecture and sculpture. Together, we poured over books on The Forbidden City in Beijing and other photos we found. I enjoyed doing the research as much as I enjoyed modeling the project! The gate and walls of the building itself are tile-able lengthwise and I also built walls to be tile-able vertically as well, although I did not utilize them. Each roof tile is also able to be tiled.
The poem on the door roughly translates to:
Right: There is happy singing everywhere.
Left: All the families are smiling.
